This isn't some strange new species of wildlife, but rather a phenomenon that occurs when sunlight refracts off ice crystals high in the atmosphere. Hexagonal (honeycomb-shaped) ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds refract light into a rainbow, like millions of tiny prisms suspended many thousands of feet in the sky. |
